There is a theory that using herbs is interfering with the body's innate ability to heal, calling them a poison.
That's just a theory. The fact is, the body knows when and what it needs - label it an herb or a fruit, etc. Every substance has its properties. Bananas and papaya soothe, some edibles heat up the body, some cool it off. We may crave bitter or sweet, we may throw up when we eat too much intoxicating substance - that's a cleanse in itself too Lying in bed, curled up from pain is not my way to get better. Taking synthetic meds may be the worst, yet, even that may temporarily relieve the condition. Changing what makes us sick is the most important task. Everyone takes different steps to get better. As long as they want to and realize that a temporary relief is not the solution.
Cheryl Kondatow pretty much outlined it concisely below.
I think there’s way too much conceptual thinking about what we consume. The discussion above is whether certain things that grow in nature are harmful for us to consume or not.
If we set aside all the concepts about the subject and in a state of presence, allow our alignment with what we already know to guide us, then we will know what to eat and want not to eat. One person might eat something different from another person.
If we consume something and the body can use it, it will. If not, it will pass it through as a matter of course. And since everyone is in a different state of balance, each body will react differently to a certain edible entity. Because of the imbalance in an individual’s body, there reaction to an edible might be mistaken for a rejection of it rather than its effect on the already compromised, struggling body. When that same body is restored, the individual could consume the exact same entity and have no adverse reaction.
Sometimes the already compromised condition of the body that triggers a reaction to eating something is used as an indication that the edible isn’t good for the body when if the individual were balanced, that reaction wouldn’t happen. So it’s a reliable indicator.
